Trillian 3.1.6.0

iDefense Labs has notified us of a security vulnerability in Trillian 3.x, and we worked last week to resolve it and issue a patch. Details will shortly be live at the following url:

http://labs.idefense.com/intelligence/vulnerabilities/display.php?id=545

You’ll find the latest full version available here, and existing customers should be receiving an auto-update notification upon their next restart of Trillian. We recommend all users upgrade to the latest version.

Thanks!

Great this new update guys, but when you’re gonna release a new msn plugin?

  2. isotope Says:

Urgent! Trillian started crashing after installing this update!

First, there are errors during start-up: “JPEG Library Errors”: “Corrupt JPEG data: 33 extraneous bytes before marker 0xc4″ and “Unknown marker type 0xfb”. Then Trillian starts up ok, but soon, the errors appear again and again and in the end, the big Crash message concludes it all.
I tried downloading the full pack and installing it, but result was just the same.

I am currently trying to install an older version, but with not much success: now it won’t to connect to the ICQ due to “unknown error 28″… Any ideas?

  3. The Jedi Says:

I notice the other day I got an ICQ authorization request from some Russian probably, which I declined. Afterwards I continued to see network traffic lights back and forth on my network icon in the systray. Netstat showed an IP connected, an IP that didn’t resolve to a DNS name. Figuring it was a hack attempt, I wasn’t doing anything at the time so I just disabled the NIC. I guess this is maybe related to this patch?

  4. smw Says:

isotope: Please try a fresh download from http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/trillian-v3.1.6.0.exe – install over your existing copy – and see if the JPEG error continues. Thanks!

  5. smw Says:

Jedi: Part of the ICQ protocol involves opening a TCP listening port to facilitate direct connections, file transfers, etc. The recent patch made no modifications to aim.dll (where ICQ lives in 3.x), but if you suspect any suspicious behavior you can configure personal firewall software to reject any incoming connections to your computer.

Of note is that this TCP listener is slowly being phased out of ICQ, and Trillian 4.x (Astra) will no longer utilize it unless you’re doing a file transfer.

  6. Jevon Says:

Does this issue also affect the U3 version of Trillian? It seems to be a version that was made, then became the one that time forgot :)

  7. smw Says:

Jevon – yeah, that’s a fair accusation. :) We have been meaning to update the U3 version as well – I’ll put it on my task list.

  8. dwightintx Says:

    WARNING TO ALL USERS:

Make sure that you read the questions when your installing 3.1.6.0

Cerulean has chosen to go the route of the Scumbags, You want this crap installed also don’t you?

Cerulean is a far, far cry from the company that I fell in love with years ago.

  9. Sami Says:

As soon as I installed the update my Trillian will not work at all… It goes signing in and out of my accounts when it says I am connected I am not it shows none of my buddies or anything. Is this because I am a Vista (ewwwwww) user? Is there anyway to go back to what I had before installing the update it worked perfectly then and I realllllllly would like it to do so again!!!

  10. raviadvani Says:

Any plans to patch version 3.0 pro? Sorry if this has been asked/answered elsewhere.

  11. maunic Says:

dwightintx, the optional software is not new to this version. At least it is optional. They have to make money off all the basic users and pro pirates somehow ;)

  12. rppater Says:

I am having the same problem as Sami. I’m fine after the install, but as soon as I exit out of the program and relaunch, my buddy list will not open nor will message windows. Instead I get the connection panel. After I exit the program, I receive an error message that Trillian has crashed. This is really frustrating and happened with the version just before 3.1.6. I am also operating with Vista. I did have an older version of Trillian running on this laptop perfectly for three months before installing a version upgrade about a month ago. Now I’m stuck. HELP!

  13. maunic Says:

Sami, you can’t judge your connection based on the dots, they are lit even when connecting, so they don’t really mean connected.

Click on them and open the status window and see what the error is, then go to the forums and search for it, and post there.

Had no problem installing, running, shutting down and running again. Have it on my home computer and business computer. New about the add on to the install, we were toled about them a while back so I don’t know what you’re moaning about dwightintx?

As for the problems on vista, well that’s your own fault for having that OS on your machine. Being a Quality Assurance Annalist, testing various products on many platforms, I have never seen a more horrid OS as Vista. My God I think Windows ME was better.

Anyway, keep up the good work Trillian minds

  16. jbrandibas Says:

Just for the record, my 3.1.6 install has gone flawlessly and I am having zero trouble. Thanks guys, you make an awesome product.

  17. maunic Says:

Lone Alpha … Vista is the best OS I have ever used, and it makes me wonder what kind of products you do QA for … toilet paper? :P

  18. Lone_Alpha_Wolf Says:

maunic, maybe you should read up on Vista in some of the non Microsoft backed magazines and see how most of the IT world feels about the best OS you ever used. Although if you’re just migrating from NT 4 I can see why you would think it was the best.

Oh and as for QA work, toilet paper would require UAC on or maybe off not sure didn’t get passed the dumb ass crap they loaded the OS with.

  19. maunic Says:

UAC is good for the majority, and that is what the OS has to be designed for. You obviously don’t need it so just turn it off and move on with your life.

I don’t need to read about crap in a Magazine, I use it, every day, all day, and most of the evenings, and most of the weekends. Other people’s opinions won’t help me…

  20. Lone_Alpha_Wolf Says:

UAC is good for those who don’t know what they’re doing. It was designed for people that haven’t got a clue about using a computer or running an app, to make sure they don’t install or run something the might mess up their system. So it’s good that you’re using the feature, it’s clear that you need it. Probably you might need it in real life situations too.

You are trying to open the door. Allow? or Deny?

Your are attempting to use double ply toilet paper. Allow? or Deny?

  21. wwquicksilver Says:

I’m stuck with a very debilitating bug it appears, after updating Trillian on 6/20/2007. I run Trillian Basic (on Windows XP Home with all MS patches updated), and got the ‘update’ pop-up when launching. I updated (from 3.1 I guess…I had all updates so far) and it restarted Trillian as expected. It ran fine for about 10-20 seconds. Then I saw my desktop background flash, which seemed normal, and I have Trillian docked on the right-hand side. So, when it flashes it clears the desktop and system tray icons momentarily, and then they all repopulate and Trillian gets docked. Well…it keeps cycling through this process. I try opening Task Manager to kill it, but before I can kill the process it clears everything. I have waited for it to crash (to hopefully get a crash log), but it keep cycling every 5-10 seconds. The only thing I seem to be able to do to stop it is CTRL-ALT-DEL and Shutdown.

So, not a problem…simply stop using it until there’s another patch, right? Wrong! If I try to open any Explorer items (Windows Explorer, Control Panel, My Documents, etc.) it gives the same initial symptoms, except that it only does it once instead of cycling many times, and it doesn’t open the Explorer item…thus the only way to view any folders is via DOS.

I first tried to roll the registry back to the last system restore point, but that didn’t seem to matter (no registry updates that are effecting this evidently). I then tried to uninstall Trillian…same results. And finally I tried installing the full version 3.1.6.0. I have searched the forums and can’t seem to find the answer to this problem. I have no spiffy plug-ins besides the basic Yahoo, MSN etc. ones. I guess I’ll try to post this on the forums too and see if I get any response.

  22. shaka Says:

Same problem as with others. I use XP home (very stable) and the only thing updated recently was the Trillian pro software. Since then, if I start a chat with anyone, it freezes up. If the chat is behind another window, I can’t get it back, and the main Trillian window (docked right hand side) just sits there. I have to ctrl-alt-del and kill it off, Half the time it restarts but fails to reconnect to any messenger services (I use MSN, AOL,Yahoo and ICQ) until I do a full system restart. Have even tried changing the skins, but no change.

  23. maunic Says:

Lone_Alpha_Wolf … what is with the barrage of personal insults? Knock it off.

UAC is good because when you try to install one program and it automatically tries to install another, UAC pops up and notifies you.

This is not about whether or not you or I use it. It is better for the NORMAL user because they do mess up their computers by accidentally installing things they shouldn’t have. Quit being so damn stubborn and get over it.

  24. Lone_Alpha_Wolf Says:

    maunic,

I do believe the old saying is “If you can’t take it don’t dish it out”. So please read below as to what you started. If you don’t like what I have to say about Vista then don’t take it personal, next time keep your comments to a professional level and you won’t get bombed.

  25. maunic Says:

This has nothing to do with professional or not. I made a funny comment that did nothing more than state you were wrong, it did not personally attack you.

Your posts flat out question my intelligence and that is rude and wrong. If the blog had a report button you would find it being used right now, so I guess its your lucky day. Next time treat people with decency even if you disagree.

  27. shaka Says:

Children, children. I thought this was for talking about problems with the new Trillian. Is anyone out there interested in this glitch people are having, or shall I put my kid on so he can join in the playground insult hurling?
For what it’s worth, the glitch seems to be with MSN, it crashes the first time someone replies. The connection problem occurs when Trillian is disconnected then reconnected. To get it to reconnect properly you have to restart Trillian. Any useful comments?

  28. maunic Says:

shaka … the blog is to keep users updated about development.

Use the forums to discuss problems, and then post them to bugzilla. That is the appropriate course of action.

LAW – Thank you for the advice, I did already let them know.

  29. fesquivel Says:

Well, just wanted to say that I had absolutely no problem upgrading to v3.1.6.

For those still with fear of the problems others have had, I suggest to exit Trillian, make a full directory backup and try this update.

If it fails, it’s going to be easier to rollback to a working state with that backup.

  30. leiden Says:

So does this mean we can’t add additional skins or plugins until we upgrade to pro v.3.1.6?

  31. maunic Says:

leiden, this update has no impact on skins or plugins.

  32. zwirwel Says:

I am running version 3.1.6 Pro (legal licence) ;) perfectly fine on Windows Vista x64.

CS – have you considered implementing a solution similar to many opensource programs as well as Apple, Microsoft, Sun and others where the program self-notices crashes on the next launch and offers to file a bug report on behalf of the user and send you? If it let the user eliminate information they didn’t want to share to maintain transparency, I think that might be helpful for you.

After I updated Trillian pro with this patch my trillian every time I start it is in basic mode always any help on this “I paid for my license for Trillian Pro”!

    THIS IS SPYWARE!

I SELECTED *NO* FOR BOTH ADWARE/SPYWARE ‘FEATURES’ IN TRILLIAN AND IT _STILL_ TRIED TO INSTALL THE BHO’S.

    Thank got for spybot’s teatimer!!

trillian’s developers need to work on creating a better product. that will fix their monetary problems!!

bundling their software with harmful spyware is NOT the answer!

  35. kyhwana Says:

@mroblivious1mf: After installing 3.1.6 in a sandboxie sandbox and selecting “no” to both of the spyware installers and neither of them were installed anywhere..

  36. amenic Says:

I have been running Trillian of all version for several years. I have never had the problem I’ve been having now since the last update. I am not getting any error messages but rather Trillian is constantly and suddenly ceasing to respond.

I have to ctrl-alt-del (win xp sp-2) and end the process. I’m going to try a reinstall and disabling some plugins….

  37. Kyanar Says:

Does this also address this issue: http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2194362/cross-browser-flaw-expands

  39. IdoNotes Says:

Unfortunately the update reverted me from Pro to Basic. A simple matter of clicking the button to take it back but it did lose some community settings I had placed in there.

  40. MikeJohnson Says:

I used Trillian Pro 2, and after a year of dealing with all it’s issues, namely crippling HIGH CPU USAGE, we trashed it and went back to the individual cliente, i.e. yahoo, aim, msn etc. (at least they worked!) *YES, we tried all the suppossed fixes, even to the point of disabling all the options that made Trillian worth sticking with through the tormenting months.

Of course we loved the functionality of Trillian Pro, the extensions, so we kept it in the back of our minds…waited for the release of Trillian Pro 3, and now that it’s out I read more horror stories! UGH, so now were nervous about trying it. I read things like “the Trillian Company used to be good, now the Cur. Studios people have ruined it”, the update issues, etc and it seems like the same scenario all over again. Can someone tell me when they think the new trillian pro 3 will be stable, with plugins working? We can’t afford to stop using the main chat clients, switch to Triallian, only to go through all the functionality problems we did before. I could loose my job if i reccommend it a 2nd time and it doesn’t work.

    Thanks in advance for help.

  41. MikeJohnson Says:

CORRECTION: REPLACE TRILLIAN PRO 2 COMMENTS WITH TRILLIAN PRO 3. It’s been uninstalled long enough we forgot what version we were using…

The New Trillian is what were waiting for cuz we can’t endure the issues of Trillian Pro 3

  42. winterkid Says:

I have a similar problem to that of wwquicksilver. I just installed all of the newest windows XP updates for SP2 and Office XP. Then when I went to open Trillian (v 3.1.6.0), it opened fine but the windows taskbar and desktop icons kept restarting. If I closed Trillian, windows quit doing that. I uninstalled the old version and installed the newest version (3.1.7.0) and it still does it. There’s nothing on the forum, in technical support, in the Microsoft Knowledge base or anywhere on the web that I can find (‘cept for wwquicksilver’s post!). Any idea what this is and what’s going on?

Oh, an edit. My Windows Explorer doesn’t blink and act crazy like wwquicksilver’s does. If I close Trillian, all goes back to normal.

I’m upset because I love Trillian and have been using it for years… but I guess i’ll have to go back to AIM for now…
