Trillian 3.1.9.0.
In response to a recently uncovered issue with Yahoo logins, we’ve released Trillian 3.1.9.0, downloadable here. We will be continuing to monitor the situation throughout the day, but if you’re impacted by this problem now you can download the new release from the link above. Auto update should be ready by tomorrow morning.
We will update this post with any additional information as necessary.
Thanks!
- UPDATE #1: We are noticing an “error code 1″ message on occasion when trying to connect to the Yahoo network. We’ve tested this behavior with the original Yahoo Messenger (v8) and are also receiving login errors sporadically. At this point, it appears there is some maintenance occuring on the Yahoo side of things; please be patient and give them time to work through whatever they are working on. In the meantime, attempting to reconnect a few times seems to eventually allow you into the network.
- UPDATE #2: The change that was made to the Yahoo servers that caused the login problem appears to have been resolved server-side. Strictly speaking, this means that 3.1.9.0 is no longer a necessary upgrade. We recommend users upgrade in any case, as the new build offers protection against similar issues should any arise in the future.

Awesome .. see you guys do give good support.
December 11th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Wanted to say thanks at how quickly this was taken care of.
December 11th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
I suspect that this issue also corrupts ntdll.dll on winxp thats what i got from my event viewer logs when i got the error yesterday. I had to run chkdsk /r switch from the recovery console to resolve that issue.

Here are your steps to updating trillian.
1. Shutdown trillian.
2. Click the following link.
http://cerulean.cachenetworks.com/trillian-v3.1.9.0.exe
3. Start trillian and you are all done.

December 11th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
Done that. Still the same. I checked the version of trillian.exe and it says 3.1.9.0 and so does my yahoo.dll. Any chance to get a link a pre 3.1.8 version?

after upgrading to 3.1.9.0, i was able to connect and log in to the yahoo messenger service. after restarting trillian, however, i am getting the same old error:
[12:08] *** Reconnecting to Yahoo! as “…”
[12:08] *** Will attempt 10 connections with 60 second intervals.
[12:08] *** Connecting to Yahoo! as “…”, attempt 1.
[12:08] *** Error while connecting (Error Code: 0). Disconnecting.
[12:09] *** Connecting to Yahoo! as “…”, attempt 2.
i have verified that i am indeed running the 3.1.9.0 client. is anyone else seeing this?
December 11th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
Ok. All is well. It seems the other parties hadn’t upgraded their Trillian client yet. Now that they did, I can see them online. Thanks.
December 11th, 2007 at 4:55 pm
i have downloaded and it hasn’t worked. it downloads and launches, and none of my accounts will connect. i checked my norton internet securtiy and it is not blocking anything.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
There is still a problem as of 13:00 PST time in USA.
Starting Trillian gives a yahoo error. Then if you reconnect yahoo it works
December 11th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
Tried the latest build. Seemed to work fine with “Basic” but when I put in my Pro information, the Yahoo logins stopped. Anyone else seeing this.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
Just some more info, I have 2 Yahoo accounts that I have. One will connect, the other will not.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Still getting this error on single yahoo account.
3.1.9 Basic
[13:09] *** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
[13:09] *** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
As of 4:15pm EST USA, I am getting the same results as sxpilot250
December 11th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
On Basic, I just downloaded this package, never had issues with Trillian and YAHOO! connections, now it will not connect at all.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:22 pm
reverting to basic mode didn’t make any difference for me.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:24 pm
I installed the latest build, but it didn’t seem to solve the problem.
[22:10] *** Creating connection “…”
[22:10] *** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
[22:10] *** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
Then I opened the “Preferences” (connections manager) and typed in the password again. I forgot to try that the first time this problem came today.
[22:17] *** Reconnecting to Yahoo! as “…”
[22:17] *** Will attempt 10 connections with 60 second intervals.
[22:17] *** Connecting to Yahoo! as “…”, attempt 1.
[22:17] *** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
[22:17] *** You have successfully connected to Yahoo! Messenger.
And it works! Let’s just hope it will keep working for a while. I got worried, but I always worry when something happen. It didn’t help that I got a virus visiting earlier today, but it seems I got rid of that easily enough. (Still crossing my fingers here.) And then the idle.dll file came up as a suspicious thing in my firewall. I’ll stop worrying about things some day…
December 11th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
Trillian was working fine as of 3.1.8, However, as of 3.1.9 I am now getting
[16:26] *** Creating connection “”
[16:26] *** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
[16:26] *** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
[16:29] *** Reconnecting to Yahoo! as “”
[16:29] *** Will attempt 10 connections with 60 second intervals.
[16:29] *** Connecting to Yahoo! as “”, attempt 1.
[16:29] *** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
[16:29] *** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:33 pm
Tried build 3.1.9, it is still unable to connect to Yahoo:
*** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
*** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
Any ideas?
December 11th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
I’ve gotten the 3.1.9.0 release and am still unable to connect to Yahoo. I’m getting the following error message:
*** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
*** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
3.1.9.0 isn’t working on my Pro accounts.
[15:35] *** Connecting to Yahoo! as “the_weavers_insanity”, attempt 1.
[15:35] *** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
[15:35] *** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
I keep getting this message. anyone else getting it?
December 11th, 2007 at 5:44 pm
Yahoo was working for me before I got the latest build (3.9.1.0), now I get the message “Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!”, etc, etc.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
I’m getting this error message every time I try to connect to yahoo with 3.1.9.0
Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
December 11th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
Update: After getting failures from Trillian trying to log into Yahoo, I started Yahoo Messenger instead… Seems the password was messed up during the upgrade and I had to re-enter my password to get YIM to work. After that I tried Trillian again and it started up just fine, Yahoo included.
December 11th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Sorry, I’m getting an error message even after updating:
*** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
*** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
Any help here? Thanks!
December 11th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
I have updated Trillian with 3.1.9.0 and I receive the following error:
Unknown authentication type 67 requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect
Error logging into Yahoo Messenger Unknown error
December 11th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
I haven’t had any problems with it at all on my home computer today. I just now updated to the new version and now it will not let me connect to Yahoo at all. This is a total bummer for me, cause this is how we all communicate at work is thru yahoo, since my company is worldwide it does cut down on all costs.
Do we know when this will be fixed or have a work-a-round?
December 11th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
I also see this error. But after trying a couple of times (disconnect/reconnect) I am able to login.
My logfiles says:
Session Start (): Tue Dec 11 22:39:02 2007
*** Reconnecting to Yahoo! as “”
*** Will attempt 10 connections with 60 second intervals.
*** Connecting to Yahoo! as “”, attempt 1.

*** You have successfully connected to Yahoo! Messenger.
December 11th, 2007 at 6:01 pm
On getting this error message after updating:
*** Unknown authentication type “67″ requested; attempting login anyways, we may not be able to connect!
*** Error logging into Yahoo! Messenger: Unknown error 1.
I went into Trillian and re-entered my password, and now it works like a charm.

One question about the download: are you sure everything is OK with the file linked in this post and all?
Because I’ve tried downloading it 4 times now, and the download keeps stalling out around 45% or 3MBs. I’m giving up on it for now, as it doesn’t have the “resume download” option, which would be a lifesaver for folks with slow net connections (like me). (And when I let Trillian do the download, every time it stalled out half-way through it said “download finished” which was blatantly untrue. Couldn’t it be fixed so it knows when a download has been finished properly?)
Also, I though you didn’t have the autoupdate turned on, yet I found out about the update when I launched my Trillian. ??? I guess I don’t have a clue what the autoupdate thingy is, then. The download page still has the previous version linked, though.
December 11th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
I am still unable to login to Yahoo IM’s on my trillian. what is going on. same error messages as everyone else.
December 11th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

December 11th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
It worked once, but not the next time…
December 11th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Then I tried the normal Yahoo Messenger. Login didn’t work twice, but the third time it did, and login at Yahoo Mail works, so it isn’t my password that has been stolen. Grrr… Well, it did work eventually, and I’ll stop complaining. Maybe the real problem is at Yahoo’s side.
December 11th, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Followed what “blueelf” said above. Install the new upgrade. Then go into Connection Prefrences and type in your password again, then click connect. It connects for me. Hope all gets connected soon.
Have a great Holidays.
December 11th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Fix for Astra???
December 11th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
I installed the suggested update and now Trillian is frozen. It says “Trillian – Connected” in the taskbar, but does not respond at all. I wish I could remedy this issue. Any suggestions? It sucks to pay for a product that doesn’t work.
December 11th, 2007 at 6:53 pm
Nice – thanks a meg
December 11th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
I tried the update, typed my password in again and clicked connect and still received the error
December 11th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
I have two yahoo accounts. When I launch the fixed Trillian basic, it fails to connect to them both. If, however, I try to coonect to either one of them by hand, it works ok, but the other still won’t connect. If I wait a short while, then I can connect to the other account fine, so there seems to be a small issue with connecting to more than one yahoo account at the same time.
December 11th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
I got it working by typing my password and then connecting again.
December 11th, 2007 at 7:39 pm
I just opened Trillian and it did the auto-update and now it won’t connect to Yahoo and it had previously. So this new update does not appear ready for primetime. Also, I had been using Trillian to connect to irc. I had been connecting to Gamesurge and Quakenet and now this newly updated version won’t connect to Quakenet as well. It did connect to Gamesurge though and it doesn’t appear to try to connect to Quakenet. Crossing fingers at this point. Mmm, actually going back to windows live messenger until something gets fixed.
December 11th, 2007 at 7:44 pm
I am having the same issues as dmotsinger. Anyone know how to fix it?
December 11th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
I downloaded the update, tried to reconnect twice, and when it didn’t work, I came here and read that attempting to reconnect a couple of times works, so I did it once more and I’m in. Thanks much!
December 11th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
will there be an update forthcoming for trillian for u3 devices?
December 11th, 2007 at 8:49 pm
I couldn’t get past “Finished, loading interface” to be able to get in and make any changes to get Trillian to run. I solved that problem by editing the file “C:\Program Files\Trillian\users\default\Yahoo.ini”.
If you have this same issue, open the file and for any Yahoo profiles you have, change the line “auto connect=1″ to “auto connect=0″. There will be one of these lines for each Yahoo profile/identity you have, chance them all. After you make the changes, close/save the Yahoo.ini file and Trillian will start, but without connecting to Yahoo.
December 11th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
hahnarama … Astra still connects to Yahoo fine, the issue with that was a change on Yahoo’s end, just try it again.
December 11th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
alloro, I looked and all mine are set to auto connect=0 already. I didn’t have my profiles to automatically connect when I open trillian. So that won’t help. Does anyone else have a solution?

Oddly enough, some hours after I’d posted my earlier comment, I updated Trillian basic on my other computer & it connected to both my yahoo accounts fine on launch. Just now when I launched Trillian on this computer (the one where I’d previously had to connect to both accounts by hand, leaving an short interval between them) it again connected to both with no problem. I wonder what caused the initial problem, since you haven’t changed anything?

alloro, that worked. Thank you so much.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:05 am
Yeah, still not working. I can connect to everything BUT Yahoo via Trillian. When I attempt to connect to Yahoo, it connects twice for about a second each time, then won’t even attempt to connect anymore.
December 13th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
no fixes have worked for me (yahoo.dll, 3.1.9.0, deleting and recreating my yahoo connection, etc.). i still get error code 0:
[08:56] *** Creating connection “…”
[08:56] *** Error while connecting (Error Code: 0). Disconnecting.
[08:56] *** Reconnecting to Yahoo! as “…”
[08:56] *** Will attempt 10 connections with 60 second intervals.
[08:56] *** Connecting to Yahoo! as “…”, attempt 1.
[08:56] *** Error while connecting (Error Code: 0). Disconnecting.
[08:57] *** Connecting to Yahoo! as “…”, attempt 2.
is anyone else seeing this?
note that yahoo messenger won’t connect by default. i need to change the connection settings to ‘firewall with no proxies’. that is the real issue here. is there a way to set the equivalent option in trillian? if not, can one be added. it seems like it should be a simple fix.
December 13th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
You can go into the preferences and make sure proxies are turned off.
December 13th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
check. that was one of the things i tried. it didn’t help.
December 13th, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Looks like I’m able to log in to my yahoo accounts, but none of my contacts are displaying. Sorry if this has already been answered/resolved.
Help?
Thanks!
December 13th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Uninstalled trillian basic 3.1.8.0, deleted all trillian files and folders, installed 3.1.9.0 and copied over the new yahoo.dll into the trillian/plugins folder. I can now connect to two of my three yahoo accounts, but am still having trouble with the third.
December 13th, 2007 at 8:54 pm
success! looks like it was operator error.
December 14th, 2007 at 4:30 am
@mortax: basically… code 0 could mean ports blocked or something. check your firewall / antivirus / whatever if it won’t consider Trillian to be a new app after the update, which would mean that you need to re-allow the connection.
(anyway: better ask in the forums next time, you’ll get your answer faster… you may actually find out that it is there already if you search a bit.)
December 14th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
virgoville: thanks. do you know what the connection setting ‘firewall with no proxies’ actually does? i’ll checkthe forums and see what i can find.
December 14th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
bingo! searching the forums, i found that ‘error code: 0′ typically means that trillian cannot reach the destination. a quick telnet check proved that i could not connect to scs.msg.yahoo.com on port 5050. from that i hypothesized that the infamous ‘firewall with no proxies’ might simply connect on port 80. telnet confirmed that scs.msg.yahoo.com answered on port 80. i then changed the connection options for yahoo to use port 80 instead of port 5050. with that, i’m, happy to report, i am back online.

So here’s the deal. I downloaded the newest version of Trillian and the @#$% hit the fan immediately! I have since been unable to connect any of my profiles to trillian. That includes AOL, MSN, and Yahoo! I have upgraded to the supposed fix which fixes SQUAT! I have uninstalled and reinstalled Trillian. I have even tried an older version of Trillian and ZIP! It’s that last NEW update that has introduced something onto my computer! What’s even weirder is that my wife has a profile of her own and when she logs on she has no problems! WTF is going on? The error code I get is the same one everyone else is getting. ERROR 1, which means that Trillian can’t connect to anything. As I type this my firewall is down and I’m still getting messages that read Trillian failed to connect to Yahoo, AOL, and MSN. Does anyone on here have any real solutions or suggestions? Has anyone talked to Cerulean about this? I sent them an email almost a week ago and got NADDA for a response! HELP!
December 18th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
So just use 3.1.8.0 … the only change is for Yahoo anyways. So try patching Yahoo manually with 3.1.9.0 and if that doesn’t work, there is one on the forums.
Did you file a support ticket or just send them an email? Are you a registered pro user within your support subscription time frame?
December 21st, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Probably a silly question, but…
My work is forcing me to migrate to a Mac. There’s a Mac port of Trillian, right? Any chance I can switch to that version? If so, where do I grab it (or is it still not at the public stage)?
December 22nd, 2007 at 3:21 pm
It is not public yet… soon though.
