Build 80: Yahoo webcams, more improvements and fixes.

Build 80 is now available. As some of you have noticed, we’re taking a little more time with our builds lately – the end result is more bugfixes, more of our energy focused on stabilizing and improving our codebase, and a chance to finalize some of the features we’ve been holding off on for a while.
This week’s build includes:
- Yahoo webcam support. When viewing the webcam of a friend, we place the video in a floating “webcam” window; this is a minor change from 3.1 and more compatible with Yahoo’s method of floating webcam windows.
- New Add Contact Window. Adding contacts is starting to get more and more complicated in terms of the questions we need to ask the user; our new window reflects this and should hopefully take us many versions into the future.
- HTTP tunneling for Yahoo. In the rare case when your only path to Yahoo’s servers is through actual HTTP connections, Trillian can now tunnel as necessary.
- Improved color support for Yahoo. We never realized Yahoo supported more than a few basic colors for formatting. Whoops. Your messages to Yahoo contacts should now be sent more accurately.
- Automatic web login for MySpace connections.
- Over 100 changelog entries, including features and bugfixes.
Enjoy the build!

Fantastic!!! Glad to see plenty more bug fixes!!

It’s time for the final!
June 13th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Can’t wait till the AIM audio and video support…
June 13th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
oh darn, I was almost first post. Build is looking good, just installed and seems to be working so far! SMW: Thanks for the build and the whole lotta fixes!
June 13th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
It crashed on startup after installing the new version
… had to do the “highlight the trillian task in task manager, run trillian again, kill highlighted process” trick to get it to work. I’ve been doing that for a while though so i might need a fresh install. Though last time i did a fresh install I lost my history so now I’m scared of that.
June 13th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
excellent work! you have finally fixed many bugs. good job!!!
June 13th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

few bugs i’ve noticed so far, on first run…don’t know if exiting/restarting a fresh time will help, but here:
status message ‘current song’ doesnt update. it updates online, so others see what i’m listening to correctly, but what is displayed at the bottom is not updated.
when pressing the add button and hovering over ‘a group’ i get the tooltip for my status message (which is where it usually is, if the add box is not displayed over it)
June 13th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
ISSUE – Can’t go to connection preferences now for my Yahoo Contact.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
All Updated. I’m glad I can get my Yahoo email now! Woohoo!
However, Myspace IM now dies trying to connect. It says my password is incorrect, though, I’ve retyped it many times VERY carefully — and relogged into Myspace several times to make sure. Hrm.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
tpaine: you can actually just copy all the history files to the desktop, then delete all your trillian folders, then install and copy back the history files. Not guaranteed it will work, but it should. Not to mention that you can just keep them elsewhere and read them on your own when needed….
June 13th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Temporary, it’s fixed now. Sorry I had tested it on my two computers and had the same result.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Yup, glad to see a new version.
However seems like i am not the only person having the myspace login problem.
Everything else connects but myspace doesnt.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
upon restarting the program and my music programs and all that jazz, both the ‘bugs’ i described earlier could not be reproduced. heres to build 81!
June 13th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Same here with Myspace, invalid password
June 13th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Yeah baby! Nice list of bug fixes.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Same issue with Myspace here.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Winamp Current Song still not working for me.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I believe I’ve identified the bug with MySpace. Will start work on a fix – it seems the issue only occurs if you’re using a password >= 10 characters.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
there are still some issues with “mouse over” tooltips
sometimes they hide parts of the trillian main window
http://img248.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tooltipsqw5.png
but the rest is good work
June 13th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Same issue with Myspace..
June 13th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I think it is about ready for a final release. It would definitely get more people interested in Trillian if this was made public.
June 13th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Great job, guys.
June 13th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

June 13th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Nice updates, and lots of bugfixes, but still breaks if you don’t run it as an Administrator under Vista.
June 13th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
my friends can’t see my status when set to online, it only show in “away” mode
June 13th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

June 14th, 2008 at 12:25 am
Still no Chichony USB 2.0 camera support on Toshiba laptops.
June 14th, 2008 at 1:33 am
excellent work and good job.
thaks
June 14th, 2008 at 1:42 am
Yahoo cam is working great here! Nice work CS!
June 14th, 2008 at 3:09 am
Still cannot add contacts under WinXP and Vista when type the contact name in the list to serch for it and realize that it is not there. Try this yourself:
1) Open the contact list
2) Type test7365347
3) Click the newly appeared button “Add this as contact…”
4) Try to click on some of the options and some text input box appears on top and you can’t do a thing.
June 14th, 2008 at 7:05 am
Howdy guys! There’s two points in the 70s series and this 80. when a contact asks to add you it crashes Trillian but when you add a contact via the add contact button, it works fine. second point: is a skin idea; how about adding a glass (Vista) border the the main skin like the group chat window, or creating a new skin? That’s all for now
Thanks

Release a new build soon, this one has bugs!!! Myspace won’t login invalid password crap, it also crashes a few times on startup. The connections window won’t remember if you collapsed or expanded it, its always expanded on trillian restart (WHICH IS ANNOYING). Please fix these issues and release an update ASAP. This build is almost unusable.
@ Everyone who thinks this should be final: Hell No guys, obviously you don’t know Software Development. Trillian is not even near feature complete, it has to be near or all feature complete before it enters Beta, Completely FC and code locked on Release Candidates, then after all bugs and features are taken care of it enters RTM.
June 14th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
I am having the same issues are Sevenalive…
Is there a way to get the previous version reinstalled?
Jeeze…
June 14th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
You guys sure use your MAIL address as MySpace login, right? Cuz it’s working fine here…
June 15th, 2008 at 12:15 am
@Z_Man: Check out bug #4492 for the ‘fade’ issue.
June 15th, 2008 at 12:21 am
@i4get75: I would bet that it has more to do with the camera drivers than it does with Trillian, personally.
I’m still baffled that the MSN ‘auto login to email’ bug is still present. How hard is it to put some quotes around the address before passing it… seriously…
And what when using the (CStudios-provided) black color scheme, the text in all of the dialogs (such as the new Add Contact dialog, is completely invisible. White on white.
June 16th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
ok…finally got my cam to work with astra…but i noticed cam is lagging really bad in yahoo…other than that the quality is good…thanx C.S.
June 16th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Thanks for the update! The changelog is great, but we get impatient waiting for 100+ bug fixes.
Thanks guys!
I’m surprised that the Trillian community never really participates in these things..

MSN is having some problems. It takes much longer to connect, and sometimes messages sent are not received… Bugs still from before: It does not save what group contacts are in (move a contact from a group, restart, it’s back to original), and it doesn’t save MetaContacts.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
btw is it normal that i’m unable to join jabber (openfire) conferences? I get a “There was an error when joining the chat room: “Unknown Error”" each time i try. I’m able to connect to the server itself without a problem though. Perhaps this isn’t implemented yet?
June 16th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Ok, I can’t find a bug reports on these, so I am thinking that maybe it is just me missing something. I cannot see when people enter and leave an AIM chat room. I have gone through every preference screen I can looking for the option to display them, but nothing. Is anyone else having this issue? Anyone know how to fix this?
June 17th, 2008 at 2:36 am
again i am going to quickly mention lag when while i have cam set to view for yahoo . But i have also noticed that once cam is started and preview window shows up in contact list there are the pause broadcast,Filters,Emotoblips and so on tabs….well the Filters tab is doing nothing..it opens but wont let me select anything else besides whats its on by default which is the “Normal” selection. Is anyone else having same situation ?

5753 Scott Werndorfer FIXED [MYSPACE] Passwords longer than 10 characters should be trimmed
How is that a bug? and it’s not fixed, if your password is longer or at 10 characters, then you get the password reset message even though it worked file in B79, and you double checked your password.
You need to enable the full password range that myspace allows!!!
June 17th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
sevenalive … because MySpace automatically ignores anything past 10 characters on its IM client as well. So yes, that is what Trillian should do. Unfortunately the bug fix did not work, so basically right now the only way to use the MySpace plugin is with a password of 10 characters or less.
This build is in no way horrifically unstable or unusable. Keep in mind that in your invitation email you were told never to rely on Alpha software. You seem to know what you are talking about in terms of development, so kindly be nice and patient while they keep working on bugs.
Reinstall 3.1 to use on the days that Astra causes you frustration if you like, but while the guys saying this should be final are clearly wrong, your attitude is a bit too far in the other direction!
This build has only crashed on me once so far on 3 machines.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
this build hangs ridiculously! OMG! What’s even more frustrating is that memory, during a hang, does not go above 36MB. I have 2.5GB of RAM and at most, I am using 1.5GB at any one time. Nothing else is freezing or hanging. It could be for 2 seconds or 3 minutes (just now). OH!! what fun!!

Sure, it cannot be released as Beta. But who (except god and kevin+scott crew) knows when Beta will be available?
June 20th, 2008 at 1:35 am
there’s a problem when add a contact…hope it’ll fix soon
June 20th, 2008 at 2:04 am
As far as the myspace login issue, i had the same problem too. my old password was a 10 character password. so the 10 or less rule was almost true, but not quite. however, when i changed it to a shorter one, i was able to log in.

Two annoying bugs in build 80 and 79:
- file transfers broken for Yahoo; work with MSN. I can’t receive files, they do get created with 0 bytes length and transfer window just stays but doesn’t transfer. I have auto-accept enabled if that makes a difference.
- sometimes the avatars disappear and I have to re-enable them by deselecting “Show avatars in favor of status icons” and selecting it again. This happens consistently but I can’t find when/why. Possible after computer resumes from standby.
June 21st, 2008 at 6:05 am
I have intermittent issues connecting to Astra. Trillian then won’t connect at all, seems sleeping in the system tray. Also logging in on trillianastra.com then fails.
What’s going on?

[...] Trillian Astra Build 80 was released back on the 13th. The changelog claims to have over 100 entries, though most of what’s noted in the blog post relates to various Yahoo Messenger improvements. I just hope one of those 100 items means that it will no longer crash when I try to add a friend. That’s probably the most annoying thing ever. » Astra, Trillian, Yahoo SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: “Trillian Astra Build 80″, url: “http://www.d3bruts1d.com/2008/06/21/trillian-astra-build-80/” });SphereTech | Permalink | Add Comment | Trackback [...]

Hey, i got a really annoying problem with the newest alpha that runs unter vista x32 and x64 (they appear on both plattforms)
Sometimes trillian is not capable of using the information stored in C:\Users\\Roaming\Trillan.
Instead, it is creating new config and storage files in the volume’s root and ignoring those who are already existing in the roaming\trillian dir.
What is that. I’ve checked the preferences w/o finding a clue. Even using explicitly “run as admin” doesn’t allow trillian to use the existing files. I am really near a mental breakdown…

Anybody else having trouble connecting to Yahoo & MSN today?
June 23rd, 2008 at 12:36 pm
SnakeByte … turn off the autologin on your Astra account. That bug is what is causing your issue.
June 24th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
You guys rock! Astra is really getting rock solid!! I love all the bells and whistles you apply for each build, but the amount of bug fixes you guys hammer out each time is amazing! Lovin’ the Ride!

“# Shadoware Says:

I think it is about ready for a final release. It would definitely get more people interested in Trillian if this was made public.”
It’s my opinion that Astra will never go anywhere. To ask people to pay for a chat engine is, well, never been a great idea. MSN and Yahoo, the two biggest chat engines in the world have never asked for a penny so did ICQ. All of these chats engines have proven their sturdiness and go out and actually ask people to pay for Astra, it just won’t ever grow beyond the “niche” it narrowly covers.
Months after months after months, this software is still not released and one wonders if it will take 200 more builds before it is released. That too proves to be nonsensical, should have been a closed silent alpha and a SHORT beta just like ALL software creation out there. They are little explanation as to why this testing process won’t ever end beyond the fact they simply want the testers to be hooked on the software.
