Happy 8th Birthday, Trillian!

Today marks the 8th anniversary since the first ever public release of Trillian, version 0.50. After 8 years and over 35 million downloads on Download.com, Trillian has grown from a simple IRC client to a fully-fledged Instant Messenger and social aggregator! Thank you all very much for your support, without which we never would have survived this many Internet years!

Happy third (or is it fourth now?) year in the development of Astra. You still have a chance to beat Duke Nukem Forever to launch! Don’t give up!

Congratulations!!!! Feliz Aniversario!!!

Not to rain on your parade, but whatever – y’all still haven’t figured out something every other messenger has done forever – automatically reconnect on return of network availability. That’s been a nasty problem forever in Trillian and I saw that someone else wrote about it last week. It also drops connections with no warning – I’ll look to see who is online only to realize I’m disconnected from 3 out of 4 accounts – but for how long? 5 minutes? 5 hours?
As I understand it, even the basic, ad-supported Trillian/Asstra will require an account with Cerulean – if that’s correct, forget it – I installed version 3 for my parent because it was easy and could manage their other accounts, but adding an astra account would make it a non-starter. They don’t need an astra account for anything. They have one computer and 2 IM accounts (aim, msn) and don’t need it. You want to create your captive audience, but that’s one case where doing so will lose a customer – Digsby might not be as stable as 3.0, but it’s better than Astra and doesn’t require the extra account.
This alpha has gone nowhere … was gonna say fast, but it’s been in alpha forever. The only reason I like Trillian over others anymore is the ability to add rss feeds to my list. Someone else will do that at some point and Cerulean will lose a customer.

You made a great program which has kept up with changing demands, over the years, that’s why I’m still with you! For me, the ease of use has always been important, but you have also been able to keep the interest of those who like to get into the program’s innards! Congratulations!

Happy Birthday and great work
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm
gizmo … the free version of Trillian does not have ads.
July 3rd, 2008 at 1:22 am
Man. It’s been 8 years? I’ve been using it for almost that long. So many giant files of chat logs.
July 3rd, 2008 at 4:58 am
Great job
I was a happy paying customer of Trillian for many years until two things moved me away to other IM clients: the fact that for miscellaneous reasons I stopped using Windows altogether and switched to Linux & Mac OS, and the fact that even on Windows, Trillian 3 was buggy (e.g. would crash when sending URLs over Jabber), and no new version was forthcoming. Still, I have many fond memories of how great Trillian was in its time. I really hope you guys can actually release Astra some time in the next 8 years
You write wicked good software
July 3rd, 2008 at 7:24 am
Best wishes for your 8 years, I use your multi-IM software from version by 0.74 and I must say that is your software is very-very good.
)
It would be nice if you would have been made available for this event registration free service alpha testing trillian astra since I made a request for access by about 2 years ago :/ (in fact, I did request at announcement of this new service) and yet I did not received the invitation…
If in case there had been an invitation to send, my mail address is: anthony55789yahooit
Greetings from your fond user and you hope at least for other 8 years of development of this software and I recommend you to add a version of your client for Linux (for make concorrence to Pidgin
PS: Your instant messenger is much better than Digsby
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm
It all started with irc … and unfortunately it is not in anymore
IRC is still needed!
I hope irc will come back and that the 4th generation of trillian gets at least as stable as 3.x was …
In any case happy birthday trillian!
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:32 pm
gizmo … you’re absolutely right. I would highly appriciate less video, less voice, less blingbling and more stabability.
July 3rd, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Imperator, video and voice are absolute required functions of an IM client in this day and age.
July 3rd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
gizmobits, AND whoever – you must not be installing this product correctly or your systems are completely unstable because I have never had not one connection problem or any real conflicts with this product.
Educate yourself before you complain.
July 3rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Imperator, it has been known for at least 6 months that IRC is no longer being done by CS. There is a 3rd party plugin developer that is working on the new IRC plugin. That is great that you want to be critical of this alpha product (as that is what makes it better) but as rogerg2 said … please be informed first. Reading the forums will help tons.
July 4th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
rogerg2: Look moron – read what I wrote – did I say _anything_ about instability? No. I am quite educated and don’t need ill-informed lashings from you. I have 3 problems.
1. No Trillian version comprehends network availability and how to deal with it appropriately.
2. An astra account shouldn’t be required – only require it for those who want to use the extended features.
3. I have never seen an alpha phase this long in anything other than operating systems and extremely large packages – I’m assuming they don’t have the resources to support their ambitions and get this done and out the door. Something needs to change.
July 4th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
gizmobits… It is not your company and they can decide fully on their own how long they want to consider the client to be alpha and not public ready. If you don’t like the decision kindly move along. Lashing the developers for caring about releasing a quality product is a waste of your time, their time and everyone having to read it.
An astra account is not required to use Trillian in offline mode. Astra accounts will be free anyways so there really is no issue to this. Plus you will be able to pick whether or not you want your connections stored on the Cerulean servers or not. It is no different than registering at the website to download it.
As far as it needing to comprehend network availability, they are working on that every week. It has done nothing but improved throughout the whole alpha phase. It will continue to do so.
Please don’t lash out at other blog posters, it actually makes you look quite UNeducated. Thanks.
July 5th, 2008 at 4:16 am
I am using it for 3 years now, not knowing that it was already 5 years old than. I tried different other clients but always returned to Trillian, because of its almost all encompassing features. Since different contacts of our NGO use all sorts of chat clients having them all combined in Trillian makes my life a lot easier and less clutter on my screen. – so happy birthday to you all-
July 5th, 2008 at 9:05 am
There are almost 5 yeast since I’m using Trillian! I’m a happy user! If v4 would be a non-free upgrade, I would pay for it!
July 5th, 2008 at 11:15 am
drabisan, Trillian 4 will be free to those that have current pro subscriptions. If your subscription has expired, then you will need to renew for either $5.00 (for 73 days) or longer (like $25 for a year, etc…)
July 5th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Happy B’day
July 6th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I wonder if you guys are going to give away some alpha accesses for your bday…
July 6th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
We need the 1st birthday of Astra, not the 8th of a dead product.

Re: It is not your company and they can decide fully on their own how long they want to consider the client to be alpha and not public ready. [blah blah]
The point was that the process for this is taking a ridiculously long time and it’s getting nowhere fast – I’m not even close to the only one with that opinion. I never said they should take it out of alpha until it’s ready (it’s clearly not).
Re: As far as it needing to comprehend network availability, they are working on that every week. It has done nothing but improved throughout the whole alpha phase. It will continue to do so.
Ya, right.
Re: Please don’t lash out at other blog posters, it actually makes you look quite UNeducated. Thanks.
And you’ve never done that? Should we refer to your previous postings? For the record, the moron I was responding to failed to suggest how to get educated (is that a magical sort of thing?). BAM! Let me hit you over the head, tell you why, but not tell you how to prevent it in the future – ya, that’s reasonable. FWIW, expecting everyone to dig through crufty forums for answers is unreasonable – most couldn’t find their … forget it.
July 8th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Gizmo … read the disclaimer at the bottom, it says
“Please be reminded that you will NOT get any technical support or help by posting your bugs and problems here. Visit our forums for support and help.”
And that is why I direct people with problems there or to bugzilla, because that is what the Cerulean Developers want me to do.
Have a nice day.
July 9th, 2008 at 5:31 am
I’ve been using Trillian since 0.635. Seems like forever now.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Amazing how certain milestones make you realize how time flies! Many congrats on putting together a wonderful application!!!
For all those who haven’t been using Trillian for the last 8 years and vented your short-sighted opinions on this alpha, I cringe to think about what posting you would have made in the early days of Trillian during the IM wars. These guys have always worked long & hard to put out and support (IMHO) the best IM application out there.
July 14th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Needing an account for a multiclient IM is something you should eventually get used to. This saves all your groups and all your settings for future use, even if you’re at a different computer.
It’s a neat concept, being able to carry your settings with you wherever you go. Mozilla wants to do this with Firefox with the Weave extension. Trillian and Digsby both require accounts in order to keep this simple yet powerful initiative going. Meebo’s online service gives you an option to create an account which I used since I didn’t like typing in all four account signins just to get on. I think the account thing is a great idea. You may not think an astra account is necessary but many others do. Some people move around a lot to different computers and this concept really assists in keeping things organized.

pnkrkrgeo92 … I could not agree more. Very valid post.
July 29th, 2008 at 8:53 am
Crashes like mad for me. Switched to Digby. Crashes pretty much as soon as I try to interact with it – or before. Uninstalled / reinstalled. Still crashes.
July 30th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Does anyone know how I can get my welcome email re-sent to me? My mail store crashed and I cant remember my Astra password

However the negative is that there is a single point of failure, because unlike open-id, you are giving out your identification and password. This leaves accounts more vulnerable to hacking. Done right, it can be a great thing. But the IM originators (AIM/MSN/Y!/Google etc) should get on an open-id style bandwagon (I think Google is on it?) which will allow users to have a single identity across the internet while keeping the integrity of that partnership… Granted, if you have an ID with one of the “Big 4″ then you have probably already consolidated quite a lot — if you have had id’s for as many years as Trillian has been around like I have… Anyway, that’s just my two cents on the side bar.
Happy Birthday Trillian. With any luck, I’ll finally get to try out that shiny new Astra on my iPhone and Mac since I don’t run Windoze anymore.
August 10th, 2008 at 12:54 am
chkaotic … go to the forums and to the astra chat category and it is the first thread.
unhuman … did you do clean reinstalls and did you report the bug and follow up on it? Did you test with plugins turned off? Or did you just give up on it?
January 6th, 2010 at 6:30 am
Thanks for this great software!
