Trillian for Web is online – Happy 9th birthday, Trillian!

It’s been 9 Trillian Years since our initial public launch, and we’re celebrating with a chocolate cake topped with jelly pudding… and the re-introduction of Trillian for Web!
Trillian for Web provides a brand new way for Trillian users to communicate from anywhere on the web, using only the web browser!
Synchronized With the Desktop, Using a Similar Interface
Trillian for Web provides a seamless transition between the desktop and the web by using the exact same user interface seen in Trillian Astra for Windows’ Cordonata skin! All the contacts are in the same place, with the same icons and the same buttons and the same chat windows – even the typing notifications have been pulled through.
Even better, your contact list is fully synchronized and preserved, including groups, meta contacts, custom renames, etc. There is no longer any need to set everything up again when you switch between platforms!

Sign In and Resume From Any Computer
Take your Trillian Astra Account with you whenever you travel or have to work on computers where you cannot install Trillian for Windows. Simply go to the Trillian web site at http://www.trillian.im, and sign in by entering your Astra Username and Password on the homepage.
Instant Boss Key and Email Notifications
Unlike other solutions on the market today, if you close your web browser or if you are accidentally disconnected from the Internet, your session is preserved and waiting for you the next time you sign in. Existing conversations will be remembered and messages you haven’t read will be waiting for your return. Trillian for Web can even send you email notifications when your browser is closed and new messages arrive, similar to Trillian for iPhone’s push notifications! One sneaky use case of this feature is the ability to instantly close your web browser if someone creeps up to your cubicle without worrying about losing messages.
Single Sign-On
Your Trillian Astra Account is your key to all Trillian-supported services. At your option, you can enable single sign-on and automatically sign in to all the IM services you use on other devices. With our Identities & Connections manager, you can add, connect, and remove connections to AOL Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and more. You can also add multiple connections to each IM service in standard Trillian style.

Astra Profile
The Astra Profile is our next generation social profile, and lets show your multiple IM identities in a single, neat page. It shows your current status dynamically, as well as your avatar, basic information, and as many widgets of your choosing. We’ve seamlessly integrated Trillian for Web and the Astra Profile, and there is no need to open a new browser tab or window when viewing a profile. Our page will guide you between chat and profiles smoothly.

Smooth Flash-Based Experience with Color Themes
Trillian for Web is made with Adobe Flash 10 to create a smooth and dynamic user experience. You can personalize the interface to the color of your choice with our color themes, from pink to green to platinum! An Adobe Flash Player 10 download may be required in some circumstances, though most computers will have it installed already!
Information for Testers
Trillian for Web is open to any existing Trillian Astra beta tester, but will eventually be a part of our premium service offering. Until further notice, we’ll be opening access to everyone regardless of license to ensure we can get as much testing on the system as possible, but please remember that access will be limited to paying customers upon final release.
Given the new nature of Trillian for Web, you should expect periodic outages and other problems to crop up as you use the product. Please use Bugzilla and our forums to report any issues as you uncover them – we’ll be hard at work behind the scenes to ensure we fix as many bugs as possible!

Happy Birthday!!

A neat trick is to use Google Chrome’s ability to turn this into an “application” so that it has its own window (its own taskbar entry; no browser controls) and then doesn’t need to remain in an open tab of your web browser. Even if Google Chrome isn’t your browser of choice you can still utilize it for this purpose.
Here’s how: Once you’re logged in to the web chat using Google Chrome, create the icon by pressing the Page Menu button to the right of your address bar, then “Create application shortcuts…”

Finally a reason to download Chrome.
Great work guys, its working well.

Is there any way to make the login secure? It’s from the main site, which isn’t https… so does that mean the login information is not encrypted?
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:18 pm
leer317: The login uses HTTPS, as do all transmissions involving passwords of any type for any network. Once you enter your login information on the website, it’s sent locally to the SWF file and from there transmitted back to us through HTTPS.
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Happy 9th C.S. and thanks for getting the web version up and running again.
July 2nd, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Have/when are iPhone invites gone out?
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Happy B’Day to Trillian.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Worked perfectly for our shot chat Scott, as I remember there were issues the first time around, and it was good to see it work absolutely flawlessly. Thanks for the time put into this!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:57 pm
leer317: By the way, you can also use https://www.trillian.im/ if you want, works just fine.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm
What a huge dissapointment. Not only is it not able to separate from the browser (which I distinctly recall being promised ages ago, whenever it was that Astra was announced) but you want me to pay for the ability to use a crappier version of the desktop client? Really? No point in paying for what I can already get for free (and, by the way, have been able to get for /years/) from Meebo. You guys better figure out a better business model soon, or Astra will go the way of the dodo bird.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Thanks for that, finally! Was one of the reasons I bought Pro. There is lots to do, though:
- Opera 10beta and IE8 won’t sign in (FF3 does)
- I see 3 out of the 330 offline contacts I see in Trillian for Windows
- Clicking the “+” button (add contact to contact list) brings up an empty box with a “back to chat” button that doesn’t work, requiring me to reload/relogin to Astra.
+ Twitter/Facebook support would be highly apreciated (since we’re already in a browser…)
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Just got my iPhone invite, but every time I go to sync it, i get a ‘ 0xE8008015 ‘ error.
I’m running 3.1 as of now.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:12 am
PeerBr
I can sign in with Opera 10 Beta and IE8 just fine.
July 3rd, 2009 at 6:45 am
Awesome to see! dimo414 I think is missing the bigger picture here: You’re paying for far more than just the web interface. Besides, meebo.com doesn’t offer such integration with existing desktop applications, the final product isn’t finished, and the web version is far more than a ‘crappier version of the desktop client’, it’s a portable version you can run from any computer without any installs besides the near-always available Flash plugin.
However, ’sides feeding a potential flame war, does anyone know if IRC will be pulled through to the web version? I noticed when the web version was first released there wasn’t an official astra IRC plugin anyway, but now it’s out, any chance of porting it for the web? This is possibly my biggest wish of the web version, would love to see it developed, assuming it’s actually technically feasible.

@dimo414 … They never promised to be able to pop it out of the browser, you are thinking of when they showcased the Adobe AIR version which they were only playing with. Please don’t put words in peoples mouths. They specifically said it may or may not ever be released that way.
@PeerBr … because you did not connect your other accounts! Look at the contact list, only the Astra icon is lit at first, you need to connect the others. I’m sure you have 3 Astra contacts on your list, and not 330, and that is why you didn’t see all the rest. Then you can set those connections to autoconnect for future web sessions. And yes, the add to contact list doesn’t seem to work very well.

HEY CERULEAN!
Maybe a birthday gift you could do yourselves is upgrading to the new Wordpress. I don’t know how many requests you’ve gotten regarding this but you got THIS lil’ bug present http://forums.internetbusiness.co.uk/16958-wordpress-sorry-key-does-not-appear-valid.html
Password reset doesn’t always work.
July 4th, 2009 at 6:34 am
hi! can you tell me how make an account?
I don’t have astra client because I’m a mac user
July 4th, 2009 at 10:38 am
tricke… I think you posted on the forums too… you will need someone on a windows machine to make the account for you. Let me know if you want me to help you with that.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:35 am
The next that needs to come out is a Windows Mobile app but that will never happen because of how slow CS moves with the creations of new apps. But I really like the Web Client it looks nice! Good job and happy birthday CS!
July 6th, 2009 at 11:39 am
ffej5647 … I think we probably have to wait until winmo7 comes in april and then start begging more
July 6th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Haha why wait that long??
July 6th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
“It’s been 9 Trillian Years since our initial public launch,”
Are you sure it hasn’t been 9 trillion years since the launch of Trillian 3.0?
I know, I know..bad joke.
July 6th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
@ffej5647 … because they are not going to do it for 6.1 … there is no excitement to it. And 6.5 is a stupid version gimmick.
July 6th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Has anyone been able to successfully log in using the web?
July 6th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
@iksg….yes i have and it works quite well! I like it!
@Diamond…..well out of the winmo version, 6.1 is the most widely used at the moment and will be for a long time and 6.5 is not that popular but what is compatible with 5.0 is compatible up through 6.5 so it would not be that much of a problem at all with the versions that are out and updating to 7.0 will not be that much more of a leap at all!
July 6th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
It has nothing to do with compatibility, it has to do with media attention more than anything, when 7.0 comes out it will be a HUGE deal. 7.0 absolutely kicks a$$. It isn’t like 6.5 at all, it is a HUGE leap. And at that point WM will finally hopefully be able to fight back. So then it would be a good idea for them to jump on the WM bandwagon as well.
I have asked for a WM version of Trillian since 2004… There just isn’t enough reason to do it right now, especially with win32, osx, iphone and web all in development. More than likely Android would be next on the plate anyways, before WM and/or BB and/or Symbian.
July 6th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Also, phones running 6.0 and less can not upgrade to 6.5 Only 6.1 phones and newer will be able to (and thus have a chance at being able to run 7.0)
July 7th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
@Diamond…….well they should start early with winmo 6.1 or 6.5 and when 7.0 comes out, they will already be ahead of the game….and how do you know how good winmo 7.0 will be?
July 7th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
@ffej5647: Thanks for the response. I still have not been able to log on. Once I enter my username and pass the page say loading… then then it just sits at signing in. I’ll try it again. Hopefully this time I get through. I guess I was not choosen for the iPhone beta… oh well, I’ll wait.
July 7th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
@iksg … you are using http://www.trillian.im right? and not http://www.astra.im... a lot of people have said that does not seem to work.
July 8th, 2009 at 7:30 am
@DiamondNRG: Thanks for the response. I was using http://www.astra.im. I tried http://www.trillian.im and its works like a charm. Thank you so much.
July 11th, 2009 at 7:30 am
Hey, where is my comment gone???!
July 12th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Well if you wrote something rude and inappropriate the internet gods probably zapped it into thin air.
July 20th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
WOW! Happy B-Day! I’ve been using Trillian since you first came out….my but we’re all getting old! ;o)
September 30th, 2009 at 3:25 am
Hi, using the full client normally. Works great. Super job over the years. Love it. My company has closed the firewall for IM and so I have tried to use Trillian Web for a few weeks now. Works pretty well, but… Is there a limit to the entries in the Offline Contacts list? I get about 80 displayed, alphabetically, and then the scroll bar keeps going, but no more visible entries. Any ideas why? Browser settings? Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers for a great day!
September 30th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Ups, sorry, posted in the wrong forum. I guess then it is … Happy Birthday Trillian!
October 4th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
msn webcam not suported yet:-(
October 18th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
The only thing I dislike at the moment about the Web client is that it does NOT like Firefox. You have to be running IE to make it work. Which puts some of us at a disadvantage because we can’t run IE (security policies / linux machines).
October 19th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
no linux desktop ? Ok no trillian
October 28th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
trillian is so practical! all in one.
i love the new design.
and now u can send and receive offline messages, thats great!!!
October 30th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Happy birthday to a great application!
November 10th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
soooo KRASS!
November 27th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
It would be nice if you had some simple buttons you can put on your web site, to show if you are on/off line, and which users can click to talk with you.
Right now, all I am aware of, is the large web tool, but that is too large. It would be nice to have a simple Trillian icon, in one color if you are online and another if you are offline, and then, when a user clicks it, it takes them to your online profile, so they can chat with you.
January 11th, 2010 at 11:06 am
hi, ok very good.
January 12th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
Hello, I love trillian web! I work behind client firewalls often and web IM apps are the only way I can keep in contact with my team. So far, trillian web is SO much better than idividual IM web clients I’ve used. I do have some questions, though, if anyone has the time to help.
I haven’t found settings for some of the features listed such as email notifications and how to mute sounds. Are those scheduled for a future release?
What about “widgets of your choosing”? I’m not much of a widgeter, but if there is something I need, how can I add that to trillian web?
I have not found any discussions in the forums dedicated to trillian web. This seems unusual to me. Are there any discussions at all or will there be a board dedicated to discussions for trillian web?
I’d also like to thank ajm for the google chrome trick. It works like a dream!
Oh yeah, and happy belated birthday trillian! You’re growing up so fast. (snif)
Thanks much!
