Trillian Astra!

Today we’re happy to announce the marking of Build 117 as a gold version of Trillian Astra. Thousands of Trillian users are already relying on Astra as their day-to-day communications tool, many major bugs and crashes have been resolved, and we’re very pleased with the overall stability and functionality of the product! Trillian Astra is available as a free download, and our Pro version sells for $25, or $10 for upgrading customers. Our new store is online, and we’re also proud to stand behind our 30-day refund policy for any dissatisfied customer.
We want to thank all of our beta testers and customers for their support over the past few years. It’s been a long road for us all and we couldn’t have built Trillian without your support and passion for the product. We hope you continue to enjoy Trillian as much as we continue to enjoy building it, and look forward to getting back to work on exciting improvements and feature requests for Trillian 4.1 and beyond! If you haven’t tried Trillian Astra yet, please give it a spin and let us know what you think. If you’re already a customer, please help us spread the word about the product and get your friends chatting on Astra!
So what’s next for Cerulean Studios and Trillian? Read on for details…
DEVELOPMENT
During our 3.x cycle, we were often criticized for a lack of development transparency and slow builds. For over two years now, we’ve been steadily updating our blog and releasing builds on a semi-weekly basis! We’re very happy with the new development process and we hope you are too. Look for this to continue moving forward – although Trillian is stable enough to be used daily, we’ll keep fixing bugs and releasing new builds of the 4.0 branch whenever we deem it necessary. We will be slowing the 4.0 builds down a little bit – noone likes software that updates itself every other day – but when batches of bugs are found and fixed we will push out updates! Our current goal is to ensure the launch goes smoothly, fix anything major that crops up, and then aim for regular maintenance builds on a monthly basis. Don’t worry if you think we missed a bug or two – while we’re confident in the overall stability of the product, we’re aware that nothing is perfect and will continue to improve Trillian.
TRILLIAN 4.1
Trillian 4.1 is already being worked on. We have an exciting batch of new features in store for you and have been closely following feature requests filed against the 4.0 product. Once certain internal milestones are reached, we’ll be putting 4.1 out for beta testing in the same way we’ve done with 4.0. Stay tuned to our blog for more details as they become available.
CROSS-PLATFORM, MOBILE DEVICES
We’re also continuing our work on all of the new versions of Trillian we’ve announced for other platforms. The iPhone version is nearly ready for submission to the App Store, the Web version will continue to get upgrades inside the 4.1 development cycle, and we’ll be talking in more depth about the long-awaited Trillian for OS X as well.
Again, thank you to everyone who has supported us and we do hope you enjoy Trillian Astra. We’re off to work on 4.1!

CONGRATS! You deserve it. Respect!
August 14th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Congrats guys! Love it and been using the beta for months and months.
So is there any new download to get the “final” version instead of it saying Build 117, or just using that build works fine?
August 14th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
It’s about damn time

yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good job CS!! all of you ..
also great looking homepage, only Skin and Plugin download pages doesn’t fit in

I see that the payment model changed a bit, for the better in my opinion. 3.x $25 a year gave access to minor updates and new versions (3.x to 4.x), now $25 gives access to minor updates within the same version.
I am happy to see this change and will proudly pay for new versions in the future. (5.0 here we come!)
This has been a long tome coming. Congratulations Astra for going Gold, and thank you to Cerulean studios for the intense development and work it to to get here.

This is some great news and i’m very pleased with 4.0 and would love to test 4.1 once it is ready. Thanks C.S. and keep up the fantastic work.
August 14th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Cheers, guys!

@musicphreke … all versions have a build number, even final ones, so there is nothing you need to do, 117 IS the *first* final build… there will come a 118 and 119 and so forth eventually anyways.
@y0himba, they announced that pricing months ago… but yes, it should keep people much happier.

A little bit disappointed that this long-time bug hasn’t been resolved for 4.0 yet:

Any word on a Linux port? I know it’s been mentioned a few times as an ‘eventually’ type thing after Astra hits final, and thought I’d raise the subject again.
Pidgin is nice, but I want my Trillian. And I can’t get it to run stably under Wine, so that’s not an option, either.
August 14th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
The core now runs under Linux (Octopus uses a Linux port of the core to power the iPhone and web versions, after all), but a true Linux port would require an entire new UI layer. (Which, of course, means picking whether it’s Gnome or KDE or whatever, in addition to doing the design and writing.)
It’s not an impossible thing, but the market for Trillian on Linux is pretty darn small, unfortunately. OSX, Android, Windows Mobile… all of those actually have more potential to grow the Astra userbase than Linux does.

@DiamondNRG: You said it would be a weird coincident that the final release would be on build 121 because the final build on 3.0 was on build 121, then you said it would probably not come out that early, i guess things turned out differently than you expected. lol

Congrats! Astra has sure come a long way since my first download in June of 2007. Now, my wish would be a Windows Mobile version! Seriously… there’s nothing GREAT for Windows Mobile 6. BeeJiveIM was good, but is no longer being developed.

Where is the Mac version? I’ve been waiting since day 1 for it. I’m beginning to think it is vaporware. . .
August 20th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
It is not vaporware. There are only a handful of developers at C.S. and they can only do so much at a time. Right now its astra for windows, Web version and iphone that is being worked on. My guess is the mac version will be after the ones i mentioned.

is there an option to create a group chat? if so, is it possible to invite users from various platforms to join?

disregard previous post. i found it!
August 21st, 2009 at 8:30 pm
alright…one more time. the “conference” option for a group chat was right in front of my face. but…is the cross platform option available?
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:26 pm
@kstew21 … no that is not possible at all.
August 26th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
@DiamondNRG – thanks as always!

In many ICQ-related aspects Astra is a huge step back. Just one recent example: a window pops up asking if I allow a user to add me to his contact list. I see 3 buttons: Ignore, allow, block. Hmmmm… It seems pretty logical that I want to have a look at who that user is (user’s info), but there is no such button there. It WAS there in v3.
Also, when I want to see the user contact details, it opens a browser window sending me to icq.com: a completely inadequate and spam/crap-filled site. Why isn’t all the info displayed in within Trillian, as it was in v3?
Anyhow, icq-wise it’s quite a disappointment.
August 27th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
why adding a users info button if there is allready one in the chatwindow?? and opening the icq website for info is not in every skin, no?
August 30th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Just a question: How far along is version 4.1 and do you have any idea when it will be avaliable?
I know that the “when will it be ready” question is one that everyone hates and the answer is generally “when it’s done.” But is this something that would be expected in, for example, months or years? Is it something to expect in the near future or something that is going to be very distant?
August 31st, 2009 at 2:48 am
Only the Devs could answer that and i know they won’t. Last i knew they we’re on build 4.1.0.3.
August 31st, 2009 at 4:40 pm
@DrBuzz0
The original “projected” “estimated” “guess” of a timeframe was 3 to 6 months for 4.1 to go public (assuming that means to public beta, not final)… And they have been working on it a few weeks. Obviously it may or may not stick to that timeframe, but that should give you a very rough “idea” of what the goal was originally.

I love Astra! It’s a great communications portal. All my possible connections in one easy to use place. Great! Thanks.
