Kicking off this week’s blogging bonanza, we begin with part 1 of a 4 part series covering new features in Trillian 4.1! In 4.1 we’ve added an array of new features and UI enhancements designed to improve your ability to manage your email accounts directly within Trillian. Notification windows, the contact list, and API internals have all been reworked and upgraded in order to achieve this goal!
New Ways to Organize Your Mail

See more in each item
Trillian now supports more lines of text in each list item across the entire contact list.
Up to a reasonable limit, mail subjects, status messages, and anything else that uses the contact list can now word wrap instead of cropping text. |
Quickly mark mail as read
Control individual messages, when service-supported, with a simple right click menu.
Mark spam, delete, archive, and mark incoming mail as read with a simple click. Vastly reduces the amount of time you need to spend in the actual web browser. |
Preview each email quickly
Your email accounts now function as groups, with each individual email appearing as a child of the account itself.
When kept expanded, you can easily see your latest few messages at a glance without having to manipulate any UI controls. |
New Ways to Get Notified Instantly

Group notifications
Especially useful for incoming mail, notification windows of similar types are now automatically grouped together.
When 10 new emails arrive at once, your desktop won’t explode with 10 notification windows; instead, a single notification will appear explaining what’s going on. |
Toggle through notifications
Notifications now come complete with next/back buttons.
Advanced users can right click to dismiss single notifications at a time, or use the major “X” button to close the entire group at once. |
Put notifications in any corner
You can now show notifications near your clock, or in any corner of your screen, including support for multiple monitors! |
In addition, we now utilize our existing IMAP/POP plugin behind-the-scenes whenever possible. This means that when you’re using Windows Live or AIM, for example, your mail account will be powered by the mail plugin instead of the default mail integration offered by the IM services themselves. In most cases this means you’ll get much more information and control over your inbox, as most IM protocols only support basic one-way notifications for email.

Nice. Can’t wait for more 4.1 features to be unveiled.
September 21st, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Very nice indeed.
September 21st, 2009 at 2:22 pm
This sounds freaking great, love you guys. But please make sure that you include options for group notifications. While it might be handy for email notifications, e. g. new rss entries should (imho) not be grouped together. I want to be able to quickly read them all if they happen to appear at the same time without having to click on anything. Even if I have to disable notification grouping entirely for that. Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!

And yay for Windows 7 and multiple monitors support.
September 21st, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Part 1 of 4 is awesome and if it is any indication of things to come then i am for sure looking foreward to the rest.
September 21st, 2009 at 2:35 pm
freaking awesome….. Cant wait for tomorrow
WINDOWS 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 21st, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Wow! These new system / enhancements are great! Keep up this good work!
September 21st, 2009 at 3:26 pm
this all looks great, but i think a lot of the people in the community would also like video chat to be compatible with all mediums that currently support it, instead of just yahoo and astra; this is one of the main reasons i switched to astra, and feel kinda deceived that it isn’t so. hope to see that soon. keep up the good work!
September 21st, 2009 at 3:32 pm
New features look great! Cudos!!!! Any word on being to assign a friendly display name for each email account – like “Work Email”?
September 21st, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Very nice and elegant idea how to deal with those multiple similar notification windows. :]
September 21st, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Will we actually be instantly notified when the email arrives, or will it still check every X minutes? The default POP/IMAP plugin waits way too long between updates for my needs. Shouldn’t you be able to notify the user the second a gmail message arrives using IMAP/IDLE?
Also, displaying an icon in the system tray when there is a new email is a must-have for me.
Overall, I love what you guys are doing! Thankfully I can use plug-ins to satisfy my email notification demands, but a built-in solution would be grand!
September 21st, 2009 at 3:59 pm
If you pack anymore into Trillian its going to be the next AOL. Hahaha.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:26 pm
@TBone… Trillian is a “multi-IM” client. It has to have lots of functionality and features. But they add *mostly* useful features to the majority of its users. It will never become the uselessness that is AOL.
September 21st, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Awesome!!
I’m missing one thing: there seems to be no way to manipulate the GMail server address. I’m using Google Apps and my mail server address is mail.mydomain.com will I be able to change it anytime soon? Is it possible to go straight to the window, when GMail’s open?
Thanks guys!
You rock!
September 21st, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Just amazed!
September 21st, 2009 at 5:19 pm
So, 4.1 looks hot, but why are they teasing us with the goodies and making us wait?
September 21st, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Diamond.. is there any truth to the rumor that Astra 4.2 will contain a complete OS, word processor, excel, music, and 100 other handy features? And earn 12% interest on the purchase we’ll get back in 20 years? All for $25.00..:)
September 21st, 2009 at 5:45 pm
This new Trillian is great, now I don’t need to have 4 different IM’s opens. Just one click and walla everyone and I mean everyone is there. Keep up the good work guys. You are the best.
September 21st, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Great work guy’s. This is another feature that keeps Trillian as my number 1 IM app.
September 21st, 2009 at 6:44 pm
When will this version be released?
I also hope that they work on posting new themes
Nice job guys
September 21st, 2009 at 7:21 pm
So a few questions/concerns:
-is there going to be a plugin for identi.ca/laconica sites?
-does the API for Twitter allow for secure login? At present when you update/poll for tweets, it sends your login info plain text across the wire (scarey if you’re in an environment with a sniffer present).
-lastly, can i get a pony too? This looks like one of my life’s dreams is FINALLY answered, can we go for two?
September 21st, 2009 at 7:28 pm
What happens if your trial has run out, do you still get to try the new features?
September 21st, 2009 at 7:34 pm
This is really great. I was one of the people trying to get the old “MyMail” plugin to work with Trillian 4.0, but it looks like you have incorperated all of the best features of MyMail into the default plug-in.
I look forward to using it! Thanks!

Greg, I’ve had mine set for “every two minutes” for quite some time without any issues. (You may get a message about problems being caused, but I’ve never had issues.)
September 21st, 2009 at 7:50 pm
I hope i will be able to get connected to my pop3 mail accounts when using a VPN connection one day…….
September 21st, 2009 at 8:33 pm
hey guys, i love the product, i have been using it for as long as i can remember. can’t wait for the new version!
September 21st, 2009 at 9:05 pm
It would be most amazing if we could mark a mail as read or spam etc. right in the notification window (digsby has something like this)
September 21st, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Nice. Can hardly wait.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Peter, thanks for pointing out the option to change the interval. Either I missed it before, or it wasn’t yet present when I checked. A two minute interval is what I’m using now (via the You’ve Got Gmail plug-in), but as a former Outlook user, I consider instant notifications to be the Holy Grail. I hope when CC says “New Ways to Get Notified Instantly,” they literally mean instant (push) notifications.
In any case, I consider system tray notifications to be key. Digsby does this beautifully: tray icons that indicate the number of unread emails and tray-accessible inbox previews. Using the aforementioned plugin gets me half-way there.
Thank you Cerulean Studios for a great product and your expressed commitment to enhancement! I look forward to your future releases.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Can’t wait to see this one
September 21st, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Does it include managing foldered mail as well ?
September 21st, 2009 at 11:04 pm
AWESOME!
September 21st, 2009 at 11:14 pm
Can we get facebook chat implemented as a regular IM service instead of having to actually log into facebook? Facebook is blocked on my companies network, but with other IM services I am able to connect to facebook chat (I suspect because it uses an ip address to connect rather than a hostname, as I can actually get to the facebook website by using the ip address instead of the FQDN) That would be sweet!
September 21st, 2009 at 11:31 pm
The fact that part two is named “Windows 7 4.1″ makes me very excited for this release. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for jump lists.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:32 pm
I think this is a free Web- messenger ? and why its Trial version ? and why I have to pay ?
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:30 am
Love this product!
September 22nd, 2009 at 3:41 am
Cool! You all are sure working hard! =D I hope the direct connect image sending is included in 4.1 >< but if not, i am sure it will still be an awesome build! =)
September 22nd, 2009 at 3:59 am
Ok guys this is pretty awsome work!!! The most complete IM in the world!! …Please, some info about the OSX beta release date..now we’re waiting for this to come..it’s an important step for all Mac Users!!! Thanks
September 22nd, 2009 at 5:20 am
Very promising! Both the opportunity to have the notifications clustered (hope this is valid for all notifications – like the RSS ones as well) and placing it in a corner of my selection (I have my windows bar on the right side so they do currently block the view to parts of the bar.
May I ask if there is support for both POP3, IMAP and Exchange in the access to mail this way? Can I have multiple accounts?
September 22nd, 2009 at 5:31 am
I don’t use trillian mail support so i don’t really care. i would like, i dunno, a functioning file transfer on msn, or being able to delete contacts after some time and not only after a fresh start of the program.
but that’s just me.
September 22nd, 2009 at 6:37 am
Sweet!!!
keep up the good work Cerulean Studios!!!
-The bajillion mail messages were a bit much so I’m glad to see that got some attention lol.
-I am really waiting to see when all IM mediums that have audio and video capabilities on their software are available for each plug-in for Trillian.
-Status updates are working great for me on twitter, facebook, & myspace.
-I put Windows 7 RC on a old laptop and Astra is working good with the same glitches as Vista so all is good there
-Joining a chat room in Yahoo is still random. I don’t use it but just saying you cant pick the exact room. Other than that it works great with providing the captcha and putting you in a random room of the category you have chosen.
- Video preview for yahoo webcam still takes some tricks to get it to show up but the other party has no problem seeing it.
-I have skimmed though bugzilla and looks like everyone one of these are covered in a open bug ticket so just a matter of time before they are address
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:05 am
@Eric M … they can’t add Facebook Chat as a “regular IM” until Facebook allows that… which it does not. So that request isn’t possible.
@jak … Trillian Astra is free. Trillian Astra PRO is not. When you start out you have 30 days of a trial of Pro, then it becomes Trillian Astra. The choice of using either is yours, so you do not HAVE to pay.
September 22nd, 2009 at 7:05 am
Does this support Exchange and Outlook?
Like if you use MSN Live, that in the mail windows of Outlook there is a sign that the person is online with IM
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:11 am
The one thing I would like to see added, is a way to set privacy….I have a lot of trouble with random strangers IMing me to tell me to look at their pictures….Isn’t there a way to say: Only people on contact list can talk to you? Or something like that?
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:17 am
@mm2kbet … I would love it if Trillian integrated with Outlook’s IM functionality, but it probably never will.
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:22 am
Awsome!! I can’t wait for this to be integrated! I have our entire company using Trillian so there is no excuses why someone can’t get in touch. Good job Trillian team!!
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 am
Great work guys!! cant wait for this version..
Hope to fix the link text color to be customized in the chat box and in the notifications when you used dark colored themes.
Hope there’s an integrated yahoo hidden emoticons featured in this version.
Thanks!!!
September 22nd, 2009 at 9:58 am
Any chance that Trillian we become Blackberry friendly?
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:31 am
This is an amazing update. I can’t wait for the updates easier. I am a chronic multitasker and this is truly proving to be an amazing tool for aggregating and utilizing my information. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to find out what updates are in store for Windows 7 and the Status System
September 22nd, 2009 at 10:43 am
i would also like to see video chat added for msn and aim! or at least msn
September 22nd, 2009 at 11:17 am
@Jacob… being that the MSN overhaul has been pushed back, audio and video for MSN probably (my guess) will not be part of 4.1.
September 22nd, 2009 at 2:16 pm
@Lisa, that option exists for a long long time now (before 3.0)… Just click the icon for the medium you have problems with (say yellow icon for MSN) and pick connection settings and then privacy and enable that option. Repeat for all other necessary accounts.
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 pm
This is a small thing, but it will make me stop using Trillian if I can’t fix it. I chat with friends and we swap links to active games on gaiaonline. We have to do it FAST while the games are still active, but Trillian blocks me from sending messages long enough to include the entire url. both Pidgen and AIM let me send these urls to a chat just fine, I can’t understand why Trillian tells me they’re over the character limit.
September 24th, 2009 at 1:31 am
Great product and very nice features in beta version to…. And now this update Lock’s even better.
September 24th, 2009 at 10:04 am
@Jane Clift, you should report that in bugzilla, perhaps they can change something to fix the character limit.
September 26th, 2009 at 12:24 am
Very useful information. Nice to have such good mail client. please provide information over thi page from where I can download it. Provide link if possible.

[...] Mail improvements. [...]
October 5th, 2009 at 4:55 am
Two things I have noticed about mail now. First, when you rename the accounts to something more pleasing they lose their name and go back to the default when you logoff and back on. The other more annoying thinh is that new mail messages no longer play a sound even though one is allocated.
Regards
October 6th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Is this working? i’m in 4.1 alpha but i don’t have…not even normal mail notification…
October 8th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
I’m noticing the 4.1 beta is crashing in Preferences whenever I pick “Notifications”. I thought it might be b/c it was on a 2nd monitor, but it’s crashing in whichever monitor I have it open in.
Also, if you dock & autohide, the trillian taskbar icon goes to flat/inactive as if the program isn’t running so defeating the purpose of the right-click/peek features.
October 30th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Another vote for adding tray icons like digsby to tell you that you have mail
December 21st, 2009 at 10:10 pm
I don’t understand why in all universal IM clients it’s impossible to set Privacy on Groups or multiple users…
January 23rd, 2010 at 5:29 pm
Guys, the notifications every time an email arrives are freakin’ KILLING me. The problem is so bad that I’m uninstalling Trillian because there doesn’t seem to be an option to disable these. This is a terrible oversight.
